MEREDITH SAYS
SHE'LL STAY
WITH WWTBAM
Matt Lauer will have to share Meredith Vieira with game show fans for a while.
In a Newsday story Saturday, Vieira said she will stay on as host of the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for the remaining two years on her contract.
Wednesday, the 52-year-old Vieira was announced as the successor to Katie Couric as co-host of NBC's Today.
The day before, Couric was introduced as the new anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News. The transitions are expected to occur in May.
Vieira's contract with ABC for The View expires this month but her Buena Vista Television deal for Millionaire, which was an incentive to keep her from jumping to CBS's The Early Show in 2002, runs through the 2007-08 season.
NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker told Newsday Vieira's WWTBAM commitment "was never a factor in our negotiations."
Zucker first broached the possibility of the Today job to Vieira late last year when he called to offer her a ride from The View to the Millionaire studio a few blocks down the street in New York City.
Vieira has won Emmys for both The View and Millionaire. Last year, she became only the second woman in history to win a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host.
